Marsha Blackburn is the Republican Senator from Tennessee. She was elected to the Senate in 2018, when she ran against Democrat Phil Breseden. Prior to her election as senator, she served the as the U.S. Representative from Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District for over 15 years, from 2003 to 2019. Before that, she kicked off her political career in 1999 as a member of the Tennessee State Senate.
In 2018, popstar Taylor Swift spoke out against Blackburn ahead of the Senate midterm election. As the first time the “Shake It Off” singer offered her political opinions, Taylor said she felt the senator’s voting record was “appalling” and “terrifying for her.” She voiced her support for Breseden and U.S. Representative Jim Cooper for the House. Taylor later referred to Blackburn as “[Donald] Trump in a wig” in her 2019 Netflix documentary Miss Americana.
