Lin-Manuel Miranda (born January 16, 1980 in New York City, New York) is an American composer, rapper and actor. Lim-Manuel grew up in the Manhattan neighborhood of Inwood. After graduating from Hunter College High School, he enrolled in Wesleyan University. During his college years, Lin-Manuel co-founded a hip-hop comedy troupe called Freestyle Love Supreme. While in college, Lin-Manuel wrote the first draft of what would become his musical, In the Heights. It was accepted by Wesleyan’s student theater company and played for two days in 1999. After he graduated in 2002, Lim-Manuel and worked with director Tommy Kail to develop In the Heights. The play went to Broadway in 2008 and he made his last performance in the play with February 15, 2009. However, he reprised his role of Usnavi when the play was performed in Los Angeles. The production closed in 2011 after over 1,000 performances. After In the Heights, Lin-Manuel began working on his next musical, the hip-hop musical Hamilton, based on the life of Alexander Hamilton. The musical premiered on Off-Broadway in January 2015. It moved to Broadway on Aug. 6, 2015. Lin-Manuel won a Tony Award for Best Musical and Best Original Score in 2008, and Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2009
