Doris Day (born Doris Mary Ann von Kappelhoff, on April 3, 1924, in Cincinatti, Ohio) is an American actress, singer, and animal welfare activist. She began her iconic career in 1939 as a big band singer, rising to popularity after the release of her hit “Sentimental Journey” in 1945. As her singing career was taking off, Doris was persuaded by two songwriters to audition for a musical film titled “Romance on the High Seas” in 1948, which led to a 20-year film career. Simultaneously balancing both singing and acting, Doris managed to release 29 albums and star in 40 movies, as well as her own TV show, The Doris Day Show, from 1968-1973. She made her last film, With Six You Get Eggroll, in 1968, and released her last studio album, My Heart, in 2011. Doris has received lifetime achievement awards for her work in both music and film. Aside from her careers, Doris has always had a strong passion for animals. In 1971, she co-founded Actors and Others for Animals, later founding non-profit organizations, the Doris Day Animal Foundation and the Doris Day Animal League (DDAL). She continues her animal welfare activism despite being retired from Hollywood.

Personal Life:
Doris has been married four times, with her last marriage ending in 1981. Her four husbands were trombonist Al Jorden (1941-1943), saxophonist George Weidler (1946-1949), producer Martin Melcher (1951-1968), and restaurant worker Barry Comden. Her last marriage ended because Barry said she loved her “animal friends” more than him. Doris had one son with Martin, Terry Melcher, but he passed away from melanoma in 2004.
