Judge Judy to the rescue! Marilyn, who was Marilyn James at the time, appeared on the popular courtroom TV show to ask Judy for her help. Upon returning to her college apartment after summer break, Marilyn discovered that her neighbor, Ryan Johnson, had trashed her apartment and used it without her knowledge. Showing her potential as a future prosecutor, Marilyn showed receipts, photos and checks to help her case.
Marilyn, who was then a student at Tuskegee University in Alabama, presented her case well, and Judge Judy ruled in her favor. She was awarded the $1,731.90 amount that she was asking for from the defendant. After the case was over, Marilyn was glad there was “finally some justice served.” She admitted that she had spoke to the DA and police officers, but it was Judge Judy who gave her justice.
Marilyn Mosby: Seeking Justice For Freddie Gray
Fifteen years later, Marilyn is now a pivotal player in the Freddie Gray case. Freddie was fatally injured while he was in police custody in April 2015. Intense and racially-charged riots broke out in Baltimore after his death. Marilyn eventually ruled Freddie’s death a homicide and charged six police officers with homicide, manslaughter and misconduct.
People cheered Marilyn’s bold decision with Freddie’s case. After she announced the police officers’ indictments, she said, “I heard your call for ‘no justice, no peace.’ However your peace is sincerely needed as I work to deliver justice on behalf of Freddie Gray.” Judge Judy must be so proud.
